The Northern Ireland Judo Federation is proud to congratulate Spartan Judo Club on the opening of their new full‑time dojo — a landmark achievement that arrives as the club approaches its 10‑year anniversary in 2027.
This moment marks a decade of determination, community spirit, and continuous development within the Portadown, Craigavon and beyond areas.
Founded in 2017 by Head Coach Jozsef Balogh, Spartan Judo Club began with a single weekly class and just five children. Reflecting on the club’s journey, Jozsef shared: “Over the years we moved from location to location, but our commitment to Judo training and progress never stopped.”

The new dojo represents a major step forward — not only for Spartan Judo Club, but for collaboration across Japanese martial arts in Northern Ireland.
The venue is set to be shared with Kaizen Kan / Portadown Craigavon Ju Jutsu Club, led by Sensei Alexander P., whose vision aligned naturally with Jozsef’s.
As noted in the club’s announcement,
“It was clear very soon the Coaches are thinking in their visions on the very similar way and deeply in the roots of Japanese Martial arts such as Ju Jutsu and Judo.”
This partnership strengthens both clubs and creates a home where Judo and traditional Ju Jutsu can flourish side by side.
With children’s classes, adult fundamentals, technical sessions, and randori already underway, Spartan’s new dojo is set to become a vibrant hub for martial arts in the region.
A Message from the NIJF

Russell Brown, Chair of the NIJF, offered his congratulations:
“This is a tremendous milestone for Spartan Judo Club and a testament to Jozsef’s dedication over the past decade. Opening a full‑time dojo is a major achievement, and doing so while building strong partnerships with Ju Jutsu shows real leadership and vision.
Jozsef has also been integral to the success of the NIJF Pathway Squad and Academy, helping develop and inspire the next generation of Northern Ireland judoka. We are delighted to celebrate this moment with him and look forward to seeing Spartan continue to grow.”
Looking Ahead
With a permanent home, a strong cross‑discipline partnership, and a decade of momentum behind them, the club is poised for continued growth and long‑term success for all the Spartan team!
